So what makes a blog successful and what makes it not anyway? I’m sure it’s a question that many people would like to have the answer to…and surely myself including.
From what meets the eye, the obvious way to tell that a blog is “successful,” is the amount of audience it carries, maybe even the number of comments per post. Some may even “think” that free swag automatically gives a blog a notch up on the popularity scale. Here’s the thing I noticed: there are many (fashion) blogs out there that has the same content over and over and over with the same looks on replay. Sometimes the content is an exact replica of another. Other times you can tell images were thrown together and the writing rushed; some doesn’t even write a word; and on many occasions they never engage with their followers or answer any questions. Isn’t successful blogging all about original content and engaging with the audience? So (in my best Bradshaw’s voice) I can’t help but wonder, how are these blogs getting bigger and bigger everyday while the blogs who put so much effort, energy and love into writing a good post are barely getting acknowledged?
I started my first blog in 2006 but quit because I totally suck and I’m a quitter I didn’t have the passion at the time to keep up with it. I started blogging again in 2012 and over the last year and a half (and still kicking and alive), I was lucky enough to meet some pretty amazing people who I know spend a great deal of time on quality content. Then it dawn on me why I enjoy being friends with these people and always look forward to coming back to visit their sites. I realized what makes them interesting and therefore why they are successful in my book.
Successful blogging is not about having 500,000 followers who only wants to be your friend because you are ranked high on the blogosphere. It’s also not about having 500 commenting “cute outfit” followed by a link to their blog in hopes of getting return traffic. It’s about having a good amount of people who actually read what you have to say and engaged with what you’re putting out there. It’s not about wearing freebies from head to toe. It’s about being selective with what brands you work with and share honest reviews with the people who trust your opinion. It’s about writing good content so that a reader can go away with something to think about. It’s about being original and unique…being you. It’s about quality over quantity. At least that’s what I thought it was supposed to be.
Lately I feel like blogging has lost it’s natural juices and sometimes it feels like everyone is doing the same thing another person is doing. I don’t know, maybe I’m rambling and I’m not making any sense (well it is 4:00AM). To be honest, even though blogging is not my career, but it’s something I enjoy doing that has grew into loving. I’m just curious to hear your thoughts on what has happened to blogging and what does it mean to be a successful blogger! Btw – you’re welcome to tell me my outfit is cute…j/k :). Good night or good morning! xo
Heya exceptional blog! Does running a blog similar to this
take a massive amount work? I have very little knowledge
of programming however I was hoping to start my own blog soon. Anyhow, should you have any ideas or tips
for new blog owners please share. I know this is off subject however I just needed to ask.
Many thanks!

I had to come to your blog to read the original post after reading Brenda’s post. First, let me start by saying I love your blog I am just viewing it for the first time and it’s really lovely. At times I do ask myself If I am really a style blogger or an inspirational writer, because I noticed most style blogs lack contents and i was almost going with the flow till I realized I was loosing being my own brand. Sometimes I had to re-write my ‘ABOUT ME” column so people would really know what my blog is about. Your post is really true and you ain’t blabbing at all. Content is king and every blogger should know that. I would be so original after reading this I promise. Thank you and Thank you and keep adding good post to the blogosphere, the sky is your limit.

The comments here have said it all. At some point for me it was about building fellowship which is really really tough in blogging. But over time have learnt to put creating great content as priority and enjoying the whole experience. I’m loving blogging better this way.

Wow! I’m glad I read this (your latest post led me here). I’ve only been blogging a little less than a year, and I’ve been putting a lot of work into it. You’re absolutely right. There are a lot of bloggers repeating the same looks over an over. I don’t want to be just another fashion blogger; I actually want to stand out. I want my style to actually show through my posts. I want to build a meaningful relationship with people who happen to pass through my blog, with hopes that they will return. It’s a lot to juggle family, work and blogging, but I love to do it. So, I’ll continue to do what I love. Maybe I’ll inspire someone out there to do the same, just as you continually inspire me.
Thank you,
Chinelo

Wow! Very good read. I completely agree with you in terms of followers & views determining if a blog is successful or not. I started blogging as an outlet while deployed and then realized I honestly just LIKED doing it. Something about sharing. My blog does not receive that many views or comments but when my family contacts me to say “why havent you been posting?! we miss it!” I feel like that is success enough. Thanks for your insight!

Hi sweetie, thank you for sharing your point of view about blogging and being a blogger. Your post definitely made me sit and ponder for a while. My mind went back to 2 years ago when I stated blogging. Basically it’s a then-and-now moment =D
When I first started blogging, I have a lot to write. It took me a long time to edit my writing and to shorten it so it doesn’t look like I’m blabbing. I even had my bf edit my post! Yea, it’s THAT serious. After a while, I realize that blogging is all about myself and what I want to write about. I should be so blardy comfortable in what I would like to express. I should just pen down what came into my head and not worry about is right or wrong. It’s my diary. I write what I want to write. Then, came the phase where I start to love photography a lot more. After reading and following many “big” bloggers, which includes you, I start to challenge myself in styling and how I can still be comfortable in what I’m wearing yet stylish. That’s when I start to realize that my picture speaks a thousand words so I start to write a lot lesser.
I must say I’m a very visual person and I learn fast that way too. I wouldn’t deny that I’m lazy to write too at times! LOL! Well, we all have those days but I still love being original and expressing my love towards fashion on my blog. I was talking to my bf 1 day and complaining about how small my blog is in comparison to the big bloggers where they have like a million follower in Instagram and hundreds of thousands in GFC and Bloglovin. He sort of gave me a lecture about this issue and this is what he said: Being successful is not about the amount of followers you have in your blog or Instagram. You define your own success. Look at how far you have come. From 1 follower to now. Isn’t that a road to success already? You could’ve stayed at 1 follower or maybe 2 but that isn’t the case isn’t it? Rich in life doesn’t have to be measured by dollar and cents. If you’re happy with what you have and value what your journey had made you, you’re rich in life. Celebrate every achievement. Look at the cup half full rather than half empty. Continue doing what you do and some day, there will be knocks on the door. And if there’s no knocks, know that you’ve given your best and there shall be no regrets in life.
After that talk, I definitely shed some tears (I’m a cry baby! LOL) and I’m so blessed to have the biggest fan in life and in my blog =)

Hi there! Thanks for your comment. I totally understand that sometimes we get busy and life gets in the way and I never mean to make my blog post out to be where one has to always have content (writing) to be successful. Of course beautiful photos and outfits are just as amazing too! Hell, there are some days where I am full of creativity and things to talk about…then there are other days where I have writer’s block! Lol. I love what your boyfriend said, word for word and that’s exactly how I feel and the message I hope to send across through my terrible writing lol. He has such encouraging and uplifting words and it’s so great to have a good support system! I don’t really consider my blog anywhere near “big” with a huge following but I do consider my blog successful because I have had the pleasure of meeting amazing people and friends like yourself! Thanks as always for your support! xoxo
Thank you for this post! I’m a newbie blogger myself and when I first started, I just wanted an outlet to show outfits that I wore but now that I have become a little more experienced and have done some intense research, I have realized that I truly love sharing my personal fashion ideas with those who take out the time to read it. Even one comment makes me smile because that person took the time to read what I have to say. All I hope to do is inspire someone to embrace themselves and to feel comfortable dressing up. And you are definitely an inspiration with your own blog and collection. It’s completely genuine and I appreciate that. Thanks again!
Perfect post, it really make you appreciate your piece of space in the world wide web and cherish it.
Thank you for those words today, I completely agree.

Hahah, girrrlllll you know I knew I loved you for a reason! You are sooooooo RIGHT! What makes a blog successful is the fact that people actually look forward to your posts and your little tricks of the trade. How you make your posts real and connect to your readers is only proof of your passion and why you are so damn good at it!
You know my struggles with blogging recently, and they were all personal, I would rather not blog at all than to put out ‘dead posts’. Yup, so I took a hiatus. A long one. What is giving me courage to start again is that I have readers actually writing me to start again, not because of my outfits, but just to hear how much I make a joke out of everything and they want to cheer me on as I go farther.
So, what makes a blog successful? The real persons that come into your life through this medium, shout out to the anonymous spambot comments with no grammatical effort, we love you too! But it’s the relationships that are formed.
BTW which free stuff do you speak of? Is that a part of blogging? Hahahahahahah kidding, actually I got something from this jewelry designer in Miami that I will be hastily returning to her as she feels I owe her 3 OOTD posts, chiiiild please! NO WAY! Lol
Love you honey! You know I have a bad case of run on sentence, and I am too old to change, so just ignore the long post! I love you Kimmy!!

Where do I begin? First off, I love this outfit. I have a similar pleated skirt and have really gained some inspiration for how to wear it (and by inspiration I may or may not mean also pairing it with a similar white crop top I own and some sandals :P). Also, I actually really like this pendant. I’m not a huge fan of just throwing on a pendant necklace since I don’t feel like they usually “fit” with some outfits but this “K” pendant flows so nicely with the look. So fun and cute! All the accessories are just simple and perfect.
NOW, to the content of the post. I truly could not agree with you more! I too feel that blogs have lost their “natural juices” and seem to have trouble finding “natural” bloggers. I feel most create a blog for recognition and freebies now and it makes it harder to connect with those type of bloggers. I myself created my blog as an outlet since I do not have many girl friends that appreciate fashion and makeup as much as me and I really am looking forward to engaging with other girls who enjoy the same things! I’m so relieved someone else feels the same way. I will continue admiring your photos and outfits along with reading up on all your posts :)

You have said exactly what I stated to a fellow blogger. Kudos to you for being the voice of bloggers whom blog for the love of great content. I have been in the fashion industry for 30 years, and I am in my 40s. I began my fashion writing career as a weekly style columnist for a newspaper. With newspapers losing their vitality and writing going viral, I too made the switch. In 2008, when blogging began to really take off, it was about good, engaging writing. Now, most “blogging” consist of an attractive woman wearing a great outfit. Zero writing. These woman have become more models than bloggers/writers. I would assume that many would know very little about the fashion industry…
But the world has brought into this concept as more and more people gravitate toward pretty pictures rather than thought provoking reading. Marketing researchers have determined that less and less people want to read. So, with that being said, do those of us whom write conform to this unfortunate growing trend, or do we buck the system and try to bring back a lost art form. I choose the latter.
By the way…your skirt is lovely, and I hope you visit me at

I really enjoyed reading this post. I think all the things you pointed out is what makes a blog successful. I started blogging in 2011 and stopped for a number of reasons as well. I like to see originality and uniqueness on the blogs I subscribe to and you don’t see a lot of that these days. In love what you do and you inspire me to go for it again!
Hey Doll, cute outfit, lol… I really really enjoyed reading this post. I started blogging a year ago and then i stopped for a number of reasons. I always love reading your site and its very welcoming… I def will start blogging again. Thank u for this.

Hey doll
Cute outfit lol:)
Sweety this is an amazing post and I absolutely loved reading it!
I so agree on ALL points on what you have said here!
It feels so good I am not the only one who has felt like this.
I used to get frustrated over it, but not anymore!
What I do is, I use all of this to better myself!
I look at the “competition” and strive to do better, even if it’s just for myself and my loyal readers!
I am bettering my photography, writing skills, style ideas, color combinations ect ect and I see my traffic and fans growing so I guess I am doing something right lol
Some topbloggers have been around for years.
Like six or seven years and did work hard to get there also.
The thing is they tend to get lazy with their outfits because they feel like they allready made it.
But hard work will get you where ever you wanna go and it will get recognized trust me!
Our blogs are fairly young, we are both at a year and a half!
Plus the fashion industry is always looking for new faces, new styles, new inspiration.
Who knows where the “big” blogs will be in another three years?
You are seriously a fantastic blogger and I always visit your site and find lots of thé BEST inspiration!
I only know a handfull of bloggers that truly inspire me and you are one of them!
For inspiration I look at magazines and even streetstyle out on the real streets.
I sometimes watch music videos from the eighties and nineties because they are filled with amazing inspiration too!
Did you know that in the J-Lo musicvideo “If you had my love” which was shot in 1998, miss Lopez is wearing blue mirrored aviators?
I lived in LA in 1998 and nobody was wearing blue aviators lol
Go check on youtube lol.
What I am trying to say is: she did not copy anyone but kept to her own style!…which is FABULOUSSS
I get a lot of inspiration from French female singers.
These girls are so inspiring too.
Singer: “Shy’m” is one of my favorites, go check her song “Et alors” shot in Paris, the fashion is ooh la la lol.
I can’t seem to find inspiration in most topbloggers and other blogs anymore.
Just a handfull and mostly up and coming bloggers who are on a mission to make a difference!
I was just talking to my Reward style consultant and I asked her the same thing!
How do some bloggers get away with never ever responding to any of their fans?
She could not give me an anwser but kept telling me that hard work and consistency will get you noticed!
Don’t look at others, just focus on YOU and your devoted fans!
Okay I am rambling too, its late over here, and yet I have so much more to say on this subject!
I wish I could chat with you in real life over a glass of wine, somewhere over there in my beloved California lol
Miss it!
NEVER ever stop blogging KT!

Hi KTR! I have followed many blogs and I must say yours stands out because not only do you create your own style, you create your own clothing. I think that’s awesome. I also would like to say congrats on your success. I too, started a blog, then stopped. I base mine more on inspiration and inspiring other women. I think it’s so important to keep women strong and confident. While, I don’t always feel that way, I have gotten better at it. Thank you for being an inspiration and hopefully I can feature you on my blog one day.

Hi KTRstyle,
Firstly, I like the skirt! I would totally wear it. Now to the topic at hand… I am a new blogger ( 8 months) I have zero website background and tried to create a decent and maneuverable enough site by myself. All of this because of a passion! I started blogging post undergrad, wanting to highlight the struggles, challenges of a 20 something year old as she figures her self, career and what she wants in life. However, I quickly started losing my focus and cutting down on content when I chose to view other bloggers – not to add my sister also told me less writing just pictures. This was difficult to come to terms with. I feel simply posting pictures of me is superficial as heck! Who am I for strangers to stare at, lol. I rather inspire, uplift, advice, make-someone-laugh whilst showing my clothes and discussing life circumstances that am sure a reader or two can relate to. I , also, cannot talk about clothes only. I refuse to limit myself. So, every so often I’ll talk about other things! This topic inspired me to re-focus. Thank you for pouring your thoughts out. I love your feminine sense of style and I follow bloggers whom I genuinely feel, in real-life circumstances, I could easily be their friend :-)
Hello! I love your outfit! & I love your body. I always remember when you posted on ig “proud owner of beautiful thick legs”. I also love this post and cannot agree with you more. Like you, I too cannot help but wonder how some of these blogs get so big without much content and being so impersonal. I think it almost contradicts what blogging is about. I can understand it being difficult to reply to 50 comments but replying to some is genuine, and important.
I recently started blogging as a fun, healthy outlet while in my masters program to share my love of fashion but more importantly, write about my interracial/intercultural marriage, which although great faces some challenges because of the differences. I thought maybe someone would read and connect with that or learn from it. Instead, I find myself mainly writing about the fashion aspect but because of this post, I plan on incorporating more of my original concept. I feel if I do this, I’ll have a successful blog whether I have 1 or 40 comments, which I think it’s how it should be. Thanks for posting!

What an interesting reflection! What I feel regarding this matter is…a thousand things. I feel blogging is changing, I wouldn’t put it in a negative way, but it’s definitely different than it was back in (let’s say) 2008. I think the blog rhythm has increased a lot since then, in order to be successful you ‘have to be’ more active in a thousand social media sites, invest in good content (images or writing or both) and that’s quite exhausting. I’m taking things in a relaxed way, I cannot do this if I don’t enjoy the ride. I personally choose not to write much in the blog, preferring to focus on the images, but I love to interact in social media with people who have kind words to say to me/questions. I don’t get it when bloggers are ‘ethereal’ creatures who don’t bother to answer to their readers questions.
(I could write all night about this)
Sandra recently posted…Urban Jungle
Hi Sandra! I always enjoy my visit to your blog. You have beautiful photos, a even more gorgeous smile and your sweet personality shines through…and you def interact with your readers!
So, here’s the thing, I feel that with ever growing technology, we are all searching for something, an outlet, a reprieve….With this comes an abundance of “bloggers”, including my wanna-be self :), but I think the facet that separates great blogs from good blogs is content….I really felt your vibe and passion when I first peeked at your site, and honestly, it became inspiring…inspiring me to get out there and do what makes you the most happy, even if it isn’t your actual “paid” field…I think that what makes you come alive, livens your content, and naturally, your blog becomes a reflection of your true self….kudos to you for being honest about your first attempt and continuing on to become ktrstyle…the brand, the image, the inspiration of girl power:) in Martins words “you go girl” lol :)
I saw your post on IG & decided to give this a read.
Frankly I am a newbie blogger but once I made up my mind to blog about my styles & tailored clothing, I started surfing the web for inspiration; this is what my blog is about – to inspire & be inspired. I am yet to find a blog that captures my heart beyond the fashion pieces on display.
The real world does not allow for everyone to have daily runway of style at their disposal, yet this is what is being fed to women at large. Not only have streamlined fashion editorials been challenging women to only be women when they have a certain image, but bloggers who are supposed to be the girl next door (giving fashion & style advice) have joined in the march against ‘a simple beautiful you’.
Your post is speaks a truth that I hope enlightens, challenge & encourage us all to what is amiss in the blogosphere. Thank you for that.
I know that there are genuine bloggers who have, through hardwork & diligence, grown to the status of style artists beyond sitting at the keyboard & typing ideas away. That status though, should not make them forget their responsibility to sincerely continue to inspire by staying true to the art.
Wow, this is worded to perfection! It’s like you took everything that’s in my mind and put it into words. I really appreciate that you brought up that there ARE bloggers who put in lots of hours and hard work and has grown to style artists because I never want to discredit anyone who work hard. Thanks for bringing that up and putting it into words Yemisi!
Wow! I love that you mentioned my name, Yemisi. Thank you :)!
This is the reason why I sign off as Stylenspire than my given name. Most will relate to the blogger than to the name they don’t know personally.

Great post. I read your blog religiously but I rarely comment becuase a lot of people with the amazing quality photos like yours never seeem to care about genuine responses so I’m so glad that you do. As a plus size blogger, my goal was to reach other women who are bigger than normal and show them they we can be fashionable and classy too. I’m not sure how original my looks are because our clothing options are more limited but I do try to show my readers both glamourous looks as well as simple everyday looks that some may not even consider blog worthy. A lot of my readers don’t have anything glamorous to attend and have more laid back style so I try to have posts that reach a wide array of plus size women of all shapes and sizes. To me seeing other women become more confident about themselves or inspired because of a blog post makes me feel successful. I do have thousands of followers on my fan page but I don’t measure my success by numbers. I also read and reply to every genuine comment on every social network that I use. I hope not to ever get too big to reply to people. I loved this post!!!!
I absolutely love this post! I totally agree. There are times when I find myself rushing to just get up a post and realize if I do that, I’ll be seriously lacking good content.. so I just don’t post. I read advice somewhere that said if you wouldn’t read it, don’t post it – so true!

Truly, truly, truly enjoyed this post. As a “baby blogger” (who started last year, quit, then restarted) I totally relate to what you wrote. When I’m on a roll, I enjoy everything about blogging but when regular life gets busy it can be a struggle. It’s those times that I’d be grateful to know via comments, followers or whatever that someone appreciates what I have to say. I don’t ever have to become one of the upper echelon “cool kids” and I probably won’t – because my world’s not filled with major labels and jazzy parties. But sometimes I can’t help but wonder, what was their magic?? If they’re all wearing the same origami skirt or whatnot and don’t even bother to put words to their post…is it all about posting pretty editorial-esque pictures? I mean isn’t that what magazines are for?? *semi-sarcasm* I apologize for the rant but your words struck a nerve since I’ve been pondering this for a few weeks.
But as always, you look lovely. :-) I’ve been following you a long time and felt encouraged as I watched your blog evolve and grow.
cute outfit.
Just kidding! (It is cute though). I completely agree. Part of me would love to have a Phillip Lim Pashli and part of me wants to barf every time I see another blogger wearing one. There are a lot of bloggers out there just copying the top 5 blogs over and over again and are really successful at it. I also hate the massive giveaways where 20 bloggers pitch in for a giftcard in an attempt to get more followers (I say attempt, but it actually works! Some of them are in the thousands because of it). Shouldn’t your blog and your following grow organically? I think there’s such a difference in your blog having “followers” and a “following” and I’d choose the latter. Eventually those readers who didn’t win the gift card will phase out.

Wow! This happens to be my favorite post of the week! Lol…..I love how you hit every inch of what I’ve been thinking lately. I am a newbie (started my blog July 7, 2013). Although, I’m no fashion expert, I do love to get dressed up and post pictures from time to time, with outfit details. I love it. Labels are not my thing; if I like something I’m going to buy it.
I knew when I started my blog I definitely wanted to be different. I like to think of my blog as a piece of my journal (not as raw). I express my opinions on life, love and all things fashion. Sometimes you need to read/ see things from other bloggers that are NOT always outfits. It gets boring. I appreciate you. Thanks for your blog; by the way, your outfit is BOMB!!

The thing is we live in a world that is somewhat superficial, so I decided a while ago to not focus on what other bloggers are doing and to only do my own thing. The bloggers that I love, I follow them and do wish them all the success in the world. You are one of them.

Forgot to share my thoughts about the topic. I agree that people nowadays don’t value creativity in blogs. But on the other hand, when you’re a newcomer it is hard to spread the word about your blog if you don’t post the link everytime you comment something or things like that. That does not mean, that I comment just to to that, but if I like something, why wouldn’t I post the link to my blog as a signiture. This (beside other things) is also the way I find other blogs and get to know other people that enjoy fashon like I do. But I agree, begging for followers is not what blogging should be about. :)

Hello MsNotWierdAtAll! I totally didn’t mean it like that about leaving a comment with a blog link. I myself do that as well. I was referring to the ones who say “I followed you, so follow me.” Lol. I have the Link Luv enabled on my blog and I love being able to visit those blogs who stopped by my blog! Thank you and love the name btw! :)
I couldn’t agree with you more!
I, too, have given up blogging for a short while because I was disillusioned with the “blogger scene.” I later realized that blogging is a hobby I have also grown to love, and has become a kind of therapy for me. For this reason, I blog for MYSELF, stay true to my thoughts, beliefs and likes/dislikes, and if anyone else enjoys it & decides to follow along, that is an extra bonus.
For what it’s worth, I think your blog is great (& that IS a cute outfit heh) and have even ordered one of your adorable mini skirts! Have a fantastic rest of the week and thanks for being real ;)
